Beauty and the basics

Style Inc. works to dispel the notion that personal stylists cater only to the fabulously wealthy - everyone deserves to look great, even on a budget. We spoke with founder Julie Leddy to find out how anyone can benefit from a personal stylist.

What can we expect from a consultation with you?

I go to people’s homes, go through their closets and advise them on what to keep, toss or tailor.

That’s terrific! Any suggestions for how we can assemble an arsenal of fashion staples, without having to break into the vacation fund?

Spend less money on the trendy items for the season. That way, if it lasts for only a season or two, it won't be money down the drain. Also, bargain shop. Especially for the look that you aren't sure is for you. I was not on the "legging train" for quite a while, so I only tried the inexpensive ones. Now I know that they are here to stay, so I will be spending a little more on a great pair.

In today’s economy, it’s not unusual for wardrobes to be missing some big-ticket items. Do you have some tips on what to look for?

Absolutely. I always give my clients a detailed list of what they need, and am available to actually help them shop.

Top 10 Wardobe Essentails:

1. Black tailored pants
2. Dark wash jeans
3. On trend blouse
4. Pencil skirt
5. Cashmere sweater
6. Trench coat
7. White blouse
8. Little black dress
9. Cocktail dress
10. Two-piece suit

With these basic tools/items, you can put together a multitude of looks for many situations/events.

Do you offer suggestions tailored to size (petite, plus, etc.)?

This is a list that will work for any size. After all, you need to dress for the size you are, not the size you think you are!

Now that we have our basics, let’s to not forget the most important part…

Yes! Accessories are the icing on the cupcake. Here is a list of must haves this year:

1. Small bits of animal print: Shoes, handbag, scarf or belt.
2. Scarves are also here to stay: Be it a long thin scarf, or a square silk scarf. (I'm sure most people have some of those in a drawer somewhere!)
3. A great printed tote bag: For travel/work or shopping, it is a must have, fun accessory.
4. The handbag: My favorite handbag for now is a large, envelope clutch. I have a metallic one, and a black one that I wear constantly.
5. Belts: Like it or not, they are here to stay. Worn with pants, skirts sweaters and dresses. You’ll need a thin one and a wide one to complete your wardrobe.

When shopping, is it wiser to purchase a quality piece of clothing over a less expensive article?

Spending a little more will save you in the end. Quality fabrics can be altered and worn for many more seasons then an inferior fabric.

Where can we find quality when shopping on a budget?/strong>

I still believe in sales, and it is much easier now with web shopping. I often tell people to look for a few styles each season, that they love, but cannot afford. If you can wait it out 6-8 weeks, they will go on sale and you can most likely find them on the web. It may take time, but sometimes the hunt is more fun!

Now to get to the “sole” of the article… Okay seriously, let’s talk about shoes.

I turned 40 a while back, and I decided no more uncomfortable shoes! I found a few brands that work for me, and they are all I buy. They are a bit pricier than what I used to spend, although I do cruise the Internet, looking for sales. In the end, I have bought many less pairs, I wear them happily and have even re-soled some!
