Fashion with a Purpose

Hullabaloo took place Friday, Nov. 8, at the Screw Factory in Lakewood. The loft space was decorated beautifully with white lanterns and strung globe lights, and delicious-looking food provided by Marigold Catering was placed on tables throughout the space.

Hullabaloo is Yellowcake’s fun-filled fashion event. The designer Valerie Mayen explained that she thought this type of event would be more appealing then a stuffy New York-like fashion show. Valerie is recognizable for her time on Project Runway season 8 and now owns and operates her shop Yellowcake in the Gordon Square Arts District

The event featured Yellowcake’s collection "Companion" that honored the life of Valerie’s dearest friend whom she lost last year to PMP cancer. The collection was split into seven chapters or mini collections; each chapter represented a different part of her friend’s life. Each chapter was broken up by a dance routine from The Movement Project dancers. At the end of the show, Valerie showed off another talent and sang two songs to conclude the fashion show portion of the night. Pieces straight from the runway and illustrations were available for purchase through the silent auction, after the fashion show.

The event finished with a dance party, music played by DJ Mimo and all proceeds from bar sales were donated to PMP Cancer Research. Hullabaloo definitely lived up to its name; it was a fun filled fashion event and supported a great cause close to the designer’s heart!
