Blogger spotlight: CLEfashionista

By:

Editor's Note: This piece is the first in a series focusing on local style bloggers. A new blogger will be featured on Fashionably Cleveland every Friday for the next five weeks. Check back every week to learn about another fabulous blogger!

I had the pleasure of interviewing local fashion blogger Rachel Kerr, whose blog CLEfashionista showcases her passion for fashion and Cleveland. Not only did I meet a cool new fashion friend, but she also introduced me to Erie Island Coffee, a cute little coffee shop on East 4th downtown - which is what her blog is all about, trends that girls who love fashion want to wear, combined with acquainting readers with all Cleveland has to offer!

Fashionably Cleveland: Rachel, in your own words can you tell me what your blog is about?

Rachel Kerr: It’s basically a document of my personal style. It’s everyday women’s fashion mixed in with fun things to do and see in Cleveland!

FC: How did you get into blogging?

RK: I actually just started CLEfashionista in March. I work in digital marketing and started my blog for my own knowledge and to learn more. I have always loved fashion and I love Cleveland, so it’s a merge of two things that I am passionate about!

FC: How would you describe your personal style?

RK: Deep down I think it’s classy, elegant and preppy, but I like to mix in new trends. For instance, I have experimented with the hipster trend. I get style inspiration from Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O.

FC: What is the last piece of clothing you bought?

RK: I’m actually wearing it! This leopard skinny belt! I bought it at the J. Crew outlet this weekend.

FC: For this upcoming season what do you suggest splurging on and saving on?

RK: Definitely splurge on boots! I suggest a camel color because then you can wear them with back or brown. I think flat boots look classier and then can be worn to work or out at night. It’s also important to take care of your boots by waterproofing them; it will make them last a lot longer. Always save on the trends, they may not last longer then one season. T.J. Maxx and Nordstrom Rack are great places to look for trendier items.

FC: What do you love most about Cleveland?

RK: There are a lot of hidden gems in Cleveland. I love that element of surprise people have when they come to Cleveland and see it’s not bad at all! You may have to look harder for fun things to do and see but they are there! Right now my favorite spot is Ohio City; it’s very up-and-coming!

FC: How would you describe Clevelanders' style overall?

RK: I think in Cleveland there is such a wide variety of style. But overall, I think people do a very good job of managing to look stylish in 0 degree weather. I always see people in really cute coats and boots and accessorized with great hats, scarves and gloves.

FC: Who are your favorite local and nonlocal retailers?

RK: Locally I really like CLE Clothing Company. They are always reinventing themselves. My favorite places to shop are J. CrewZaraAnthropologieUrban Outfitters, and for a great deal I like T.J. Maxx and Nordstrom Rack.

FC: What advice would you give to aspiring fashion bloggers?

RK: You need to remember your roots in terms of your own personal style. You can’t be influenced by bigger brands; only write about what you believe in. Posting regularly is important. Also finding something special to do consistently, for instance, every Friday I post my Friday finds. I post four things that I have found throughout the week.

FC: How often do you post?

RK: At least four times a week but the goal is to post once daily.

FC: What do you like most about blogging?

RK: blogging has allowed me to meet a lot of really cool people. And the possibilities are endless. I love fashion and blogging is my outlet, I’m super passionate about it!

FC: How about one last piece of general fashion advice?

RK: Splurge on the classics, wear them all the time, but find new ways to wear them. And in Cleveland wearing layers is important!
